Pilot Reading Scheme Has Started Well At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

A pilot reading scheme has been undertaken by St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Christchurch and all the early signs indicate it is going to be a great success.

“It is an online reading scheme that enhances the use of hard-back books,” says Carole Dayantis, Literacy Leader. “It is something we are using throughout the school, as great emphasis is placed on reading and the importance it can play in the overall development of a child.”

After a book has been read online, certain questions are asked to make sure the child has understood what they have read before they move on to the next book and/or level. The children can even earn badges and check their own progress.

“We are something of pioneers for this new way to encourage reading and we will obviously be reviewing the outcomes and participation over time,” says Gerry Curran, Acting Head teacher. “We are very grateful to J.P. Morgan who made a donation towards the overall cost which was extremely helpful.”

J.P. Morgan employs 4,000 people at its technology and operations centre in Bournemouth and has a strong history of community engagement.

“It has enabled the children to be able to access more books than ever before and they clearly are able to obtain more enjoyment from the books they read as they become more confident,” added Gerry.

Children can spend 5 to10 minutes reading online, in certain cases, and even have an online reading buddy who talks to them.

“The children are very enthusiastic and we have high hopes that this will continue to be the case as they become even more familiar with the scheme,” says Carole.
