The College champions hospitality apprentices

Bournemouth & Poole College teamed up with the BH Area Hospitality Association (BAHA) to celebrate the successes of young people working in the hospitality industry for their apprenticeship.

The BAHA Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony event took place at the Marsham Court Hotel, on Russell-Cotes Road, in Bournemouth and was attended by a host of businessmen and women from hotels, restaurants, catering firms and tourism businesses.

Featuring three categories which were Catering Apprentice of the Year, Hospitality Team Member of the Year and Outstanding Progression, the inaugural event aimed to highlight the hard work that young people from across Dorset are currently putting into pursuing their chosen career within the industry. It also served as a chance to reflect on the progress made by the apprentices within their training course at the Bournemouth & Poole College, and during their work experience with their employer.

James Gulliver, an apprentice at Signature Catering in Ringwood, won the Catering Apprentice of the Year award, Sophie George, an apprentice at The Marsham Court in Bournemouth, picked up the Hospitality Apprentice of the Year award, and Grace Hobby, an apprentice at Hurst on the Hill in Highcliffe, scooped the Outstanding Progression Award.

Matt Butcher, Head of BASE at Bournemouth & Poole College said: “We were keen to work in partnership with BAHA on this event to highlight the achievements of our hospitality and catering apprentices. We hope events such as this will bring awareness to these apprenticeship courses, employers and the journey that our apprentices can go onto after their studies. We hope to make this an annual event and grow this area over the next few years.”

Bournemouth & Poole College offers a host of apprenticeships within the catering industry including commis chef, chef de partie and hospitality team member, as well as a range of courses including a part-time NVQ2 in Professional Cookery, the Certificate in Food Preparation and Service, and the Specialised Chefs Scholarship.
