The future looks bright for the Marine Industry as Bournemouth & Poole College students lead the way at national competition

Earlier this month Bournemouth & Poole College students again excelled as the College secured its fourth consecutive award at a national contest which took place during the prestigious annual British Marine Electrical and Electronics Association (BMEEA) national conference, held at the Novotel in Southampton.

College students took part in an apprentice’s competition which featured some outstanding teams from RNLI, Sunseeker International Ltd and Berthon Boats. With the competition designed to recognise the very best of young British talent in the Marine Electrical sector, candidates were tasked with completing an electrical technical task.

The winners were the College’s second year apprentices Jordan Warren and Fred Wills of Sunseeker. Jordan and Fred explained that the competition revolved around designing, drawing and creating an electrical circuit for running a DC motor in forward and reverse using switching and relays. They also had to include volt-drop and cable sizing calculations for the circuit.

Richard Broden-Cowell, tutor in Marine Electrical Engineering, emphasised that this was a challenging competition, and one which required an extremely high level of competence. He explained that he chose Jordan and Fred to represent the College as they both had unique skill-sets which complimented one another. Jordan is a confident student as well as an accomplished mathematician, whilst Fred was able to excel in the circuit design and drawing areas of the competition.

Richard also made sure to note that the competition itself is an excellent way for students to network and get noticed in the Marine Industry. British Marine are the lynchpin of the Marine industry in this country, and Jordan and Fred were presented with their award by senior figures Paul Holland and Tim Davies, representing Energy Solutions and Navico respectively.
