Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November every year and is celebrated widely across Britain. In preparation for the day, children from Tops Day Nurseries have been taking part in a number of activities to respect our fallen heroes.
“The children at Tops Havant were accompanied by the Mayor, Elaine Shimbart”, to lay handmade poppy wreaths against the war memorial at St Faith’s Church. Complementary of the efforts of the children at Tops Havant, the Mayor said “It was really nice to join the children of the nursery for this event, I feel it’s very important for children to learn about soldiers and sailors.”
Similarly, Cllr Barry Dunning, Mayor of Lymington and Cllr Anne Corbridge, Deputy Mayor, visited Tops Lymington to take part in a 2 minute silence with the children, who were encouraged to wear red and black to match the poppies that decorated the walls of the setting.
During the Mayors visit he said ‘It was wonderful to visit Tops Lymington. It’s so important for young children to realise how fortunate they are and the importance of Remembrance, as if it is forgotten events of the past could be easily repeated.’ In addition to this the Deputy Mayor said ‘It’s lovely to see Tops are talking to the youngest children within our society about important events in such a caring and lovely way so they are not forgotten. It’s wonderful to see events such as this bringing the community together.’
The Pre-school children at Tops Gillingham were privileged to receive a visit from an RAF member, Flight Lieutenant Victoria Rees, who is currently working as part of Air traffic Control at a local base.
Tops Mini Mariners and Musgrove, both based in Taunton, carried out various activities. Children at Tops Mini Mariners took part in selling poppy merchandise in the town on behalf of the Royal British Legion. Children at Tops Musgrove visited local care home, St George’s Residential Home, to make poppies using photos of soldiers with the residents.
The children talked about why we celebrate Remembrance Day and the importance of remembering the soldiers.
To remember the soldiers that died in the line of duty and to further their knowledge of what Remembrance Day represents, pre-school children from Tops Wareham placed poppy wreaths at the Bovington Tank Museum, beneath the Royal Tank Regiment Memorial Statue. The children learned about the tanks that would have been used during the First World War, which were also decorated with a single poppy.
Across all 19 Tops Day Nurseries settings, the children learn and respect British Values. We are extremely proud of the respect and empathy shown by the children in all nurseries, and the interest they showed in learning more about the reason behind Remembrance Day.
