Two students from The Bournemouth & Poole College have been elected to the position of Student Board Member and will sit on the College’s Board of Corporation for the next year.
Cameron Whittingham, a Business student and Kellie Northover, a Media student will be helping to shape the Board’s vision for the college and will be working alongside them to deliver that vision. At their first Board meeting recently, both Cameron and Kellie were invited to deliver a presentation about the progress of Student Voice meetings involving student representatives and the achievements of the Students’ Union, BPCSU, who won the National Union of Students Democracy Award earlier this year.
The Board of Corporation is responsible for the operation and performance of the college and the governance of its business. It comprises of 14 members including the Principal and Chief Executive, Diane Grannell and business leaders ranging from the Digital to the Engineering and Finance sectors.
Cameron and Kellie have both been active members of the student community since joining the College. They first found out about the student governor role at the annual Student Voice Conference, hosted each year by the Students’ Union, BPCSU.
Cameron said: “After hearing about the role I was really motivated by the prospect of working closely with the BPCSU to provide the Board with a student’s perspective of life at The College.”
Kellie said: “I am very excited about this role. I really think it is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact on The College.”
As the year progresses, Cameron and Kellie want their roles to be as widely known as possible, and have recently launched their own Facebook page, ‘The Office of the Student Governor’, to promote the work they do and their role within The College.
The College Principal, Diane Grannell, has already been impressed with Cameron and Kellie’s efforts. She said: “We have already seen their talent and enthusiasm in the two meetings they have attended so far. Along with the rest of the Board I am confident we can continue to deliver the best possible student experience to all of our students.”
